Nurses’ Symposium

The Access Transfer Center at New York Presbyterian hosted their 11th annual Nurses’ Symposium on Thursday, April 28th 2016. Nurses are vital resources in identifying potential ECMO candidates. The ECMO presentation included presentations by one of our pulmonary/critical care attending physicians, our co-chief nurse practitioners, and our ECMO surgical fellow. Dr. Darryl Abrams began the presentation with a discussion of the types of ECMO support available at NYP/Columbia, indications and contraindications for ECMO, and a brief overview of historical ECMO trials. Paul Boerem and Allyson Klein, our co-chief nurse practitioners, reviewed the intake process for ECMO referrals and discussed how our Medical Intensive Care Unit manages patients who are supported with ECMO. Dr. Scott Chicotka, our surgical fellow, discussed the process of transferring patients on ECMO from referring hospitals. The presentation furthered the ECMO team’s goal to educate clinicians about ECMO transport and the benefits and uses of ECMO support.
