Expanding Our Expertise in Vascular Surgery

Virendra I. Patel, MD, MPH, a national expert in the field of vascular surgery, has joined NYP/Columbia as Chief of Vascular Surgery and Co-director of The Aortic Program. He was also named Associate Professor of Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center.

Dr. Patel was previously with the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and affiliated with the Newton-Wellesley Hospital and others in the Boston area, while serving as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School.

“My goal is develop a world class program at Columbia in central aortic surgery, incorporating open and advanced endovascular techniques. Working closely with Dr. Hiroo Takayama and other members of the Aortic Center, we will offer one-stop solutions for any complex aortic pathology from the aortic valve down to the femoral arteries. Our surgical team will also collaborate with other experts at Columbia to provide the most comprehensive care available for these patients.”

Dr. Patel is currently in the process of acquiring a physician-sponsored investigational device exemption (IDE) from the Food and Drug Administration to study the outcomes of branched and fenestrated grafts in the treatment of aortic aneurysms. “We will be soon be able to provide patients with either a custom made or off the shelf option for the repair of thoracic aortic aneurysms, complex abdominal aortic aneurysms, and iliac aneurysms,” he says.

Dr. Patel manages the full spectrum of vascular disease and performs both open and endovascular arterial and venous surgery. His research focuses on clinical outcomes of open and endovascular surgery.
