Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disease that affects nearly 65 million people in the United States.¹ It occurs when stomach acid or stomach contents flow back into your food pipe (esophagus). The backwash (reflux) irritates the lining of your esophagus and causes GERD.² Frequent and troublesome symptoms may include one or more of the following: heartburn, regurgitation, sleep disruption, vocal impairment, and respiratory complications.
