Sleep & Cognition in Hyperparathyroidism Study

 If you have primary hyperparathyroidism, an enlarged thyroid, or thyroid nodules, you may be eligible to participate in the Sleep & Cognition in Hyperparathyroidism (SHh) study.

The Endocrine Surgery team at Columbia is looking at whether sleep quality, brain function, and mood improve after surgery in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and certain types of thyroid disease.

What's Involved?

Participants will be asked to partake in:

  • A noninvasive at home sleep apnea test
  • Blood work
  • Mood questionnaires
  • Memory tests
  • Wearing a watch (similar to an iWatch or a Fitbit) to monitor sleep at home

Am I Eligible?

You may be eligible, if you are:

  • A man or post-menopausal woman (at least 2 years post-menopause)
  • Undergoing parathyroid or thyroid surgery                 
  • Speak English as your first language

What Else Should I Know?

  • If eligible, your participation will last ~ 7 months with just 3 visits (either in-person or via video visit).
  • In person visits will take place at Columbia University Irving Medical
    Center, 161 Fort Washington Avenue, 8th floor, New York, NY 10032. Video
    visits will take place via Zoom or Doximity.
