Robotic Surgery at Columbia

Robotic Surgery at Columbia

Columbia is at the forefront of the latest surgical techniques to improve care for you and your family. Our robotic surgery programs combine the highest level of skill with the most advanced technologies, allowing our specialists to leverage their wealth of experience in new and exciting ways.

What is Robotic Surgery?

Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive technique where the surgeon uses a machine, or “robot,” to perform procedures with a high degree of precision and control. The robot functions as an extension of a surgeon’s hands and eyes, offering improved stability and range of motion.

The robot has several arm-like extensions that pass through small incisions into the body and can mimic the delicate movements of the human hand. The surgeon guides those movements from an ergonomically designed console, reducing strain and allowing for small movements with pinpoint accuracy. A high-resolution 3D camera system delivers a magnified, real-time view of the surgical site, allowing the surgeon to see everything that is happening during the procedure.

Because robotic surgery is performed through small incisions, it avoids the large incisions associated with traditional open surgery. This minimally invasive approach offers several benefits, including:

  • Less pain during recovery
  • Lower risk of complications, such as infection
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Faster recovery times

Our robotic surgery programs use da Vinci surgical systems, the established world leader for surgical robots with a proven track record of reliability, precision, flexibility, and functionality.

Highlights of Our Robotic Surgery Work

Pairing World-Class Skill with Advanced Technologies

A surgical robot is an amazing tool, but it requires a skilled surgeon with specialized training to take full advantage of this technology. Our robotic surgery experts have the knowledge and experience you’ve come to expect from Columbia.

Exploring New Areas for Treatment

Columbia continues to drive innovation and progress toward improving surgical outcomes. Our surgical teams are looking at new ways to use robotic surgery to deliver the best care for you and your family, with quicker recovery times and fewer complications.

Making Living Donor Liver Transplantation Easier

It is now possible to perform a liver transplant using a portion of a liver from a living donor, offering this life-saving surgery to more people than ever. Robotic liver transplant surgery provides a minimally invasive option that shortens recovery and reduces the risk of complications for both donor and recipient.

Treating Heart Disease Without Open Surgery

Our Robotic Cardiac Surgery Program offers minimally invasive care for conditions like mitral valve disease, providing treatment options for patients who are not candidates for traditional heart surgery.
