The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Columbia University and NewYork Presbyterian Hospital offers one-year advanced fellowship training in IBD with the goal of further knowledge and advancing academic career. Each year, one fellow will have the opportunity to receive advanced training in IBD.
About the IBD Fellowship Program
The IBD fellowship training exposes the advanced IBD fellow to outpatient and inpatient care of patients with IBD. Columbia University’s IBD Center is a tertiary care referral center managing patients with complex and refractory IBD. The IBD fellow will have the opportunity to work with the IBD-focused gastroenterology and IBD surgery faculty at Columbia University. The outpatient clinic sessions will allow the IBD fellow to advance their clinical knowledge in the diagnosis and management of IBD. The advanced IBD fellow will follow our established patients in the IBD service and will be exposed to practice in our infusion center. The IBD fellow also covers IBD inpatient consults.
The fellow is responsible for the coordination and presentation at weekly IBD didactic conference and monthly multidisciplinary IBD board of Columbia University/Cornell University, which includes case presentations and journal club. During the one-year training, there will be allocated time for exposure to GI radiology, GI pathology, IBD surgery, diagnostic and therapeutic IBD endoscopy, and pediatric IBD. The advanced IBD fellow will spend time with radiologists who are specialized in abdominal imaging. The IBD Fellows who are board-certified/eligible in gastroenterology will have the opportunity to perform endoscopy. Our goal is to train academic, clinical IBD specialists, who have been exposed to a wide variety of clinical settings in IBD.
The advanced IBD fellow will have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials and translational research. Ongoing clinical trials with an established research team will be available; however, individual research interests are encouraged. Depending on interest, a mentor will be assigned who will supervise the individual project. Fellows will be expected to present their original research at national conferences, complete publication of their research, and write a clinical review paper. No specific antecedent research is required.
Eligibility
Applicants should have completed training in an internal medicine residency program. Gastroenterology fellowship at an ACGME accredited institution (or equivalent if non-US trained) is preferred but not required. A medical license to practice in New York State is required.
