Why Choose Columbia for Emphysema and COPD Care?

  • Expertise in Lung Care: Our surgeons treat more patients with COPD and emphysema than other hospital in the New York metro area. This volume allows our experts to master surgery techniques such as lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) and lung transplantation.
  • Exceptional Outcomes: We are at the forefront of emphysema surgery care. Our lung volume reduction surgery results are better than those of any other center in the country, including the lowest mortality rate. Our Lung Transplant Program is one of the highest-volume centers in the Northeast.
  • Recognized Leadership: Columbia University Irving Medical Center is the only medical center in the NYC-metro area to be designated as a Center of Excellence by the National Institute of Health for specialized emphysema surgeries like lung volume reduction surgery. This means that our surgeons are highly trained and provide exceptional outcomes above and beyond other hospitals.

Our Services

The Surgical Emphysema Program offers a wide range of surgical treatments for patients with COPD. We offer minimally-invasive surgery options for a majority of our patients with emphysema.

Lung Volume Reduction Surgery Program

Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) is the surgical removal of severely damaged lung tissue. By removing the diseased tissue, the goal is to improve remaining lung function in those with end-stage emphysema. Our surgeons are among the first to use this technique, leading the United States in volume and survival rates. We are the only NYC hospital to be designated a Center of Excellence by the NIH for lung volume reduction surgery.

Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction

We are a leading center for bronchoscopic lung volume reduction surgery. Our team has participated in several trials of valve-based bronchoscopic lung reduction (BLVR) and are an active center for FDA-approved bronchoscopic valves.

Lung Transplant Program at Columbia

Patients who are candidates for lung transplantation are referred to the NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center Lung Transplant Program, one of the most active and successful in the country.
