Our Heritage

The Department of Surgery at Columbia University, which traces its origins to the pre-Revolutionary era of 1767, is today considered one of the world's foremost centers for surgery. At the core of this well-earned reputation is our staff; indeed, thousands of the most talented physicians at the top medical schools in the country compete for the opportunity to be a part of our team. We are privileged to have more than 50 premier surgeons, 52 residents, and other dedicated staff members providing state-of-the-art patient care, conducting cutting-edge research, and training others through our expert publications and educational programs.

A Focus on Patient Care

We are dedicated to providing outstanding care, from the patient's initial consultation and diagnostic testing through surgery and follow-up care. We can help patients obtain a second opinion and also assist in arranging necessary physical therapy, rehabilitation, and other ancillary services for our patients and their families. The breadth of expertise in the Department spans almost every surgical specialty and subspecialty.
