American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP)
Clinical registry of selection of surgical procedures with validated risk adjustment. Application and funding required to access the data for research purposes, but CUMC as a participating site is eligible.

Offers several websites providing preformed reports as well as providing application process for limited and more comprehensive data sets. Summary data on the utilization and payments for procedures, services, and prescription drugs provided to Medicare beneficiaries by specific inpatient and outpatient hospitals, physicians, and other suppliers.

National Death Index

National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample (NIS)
Data registry established by AHRQ which contains administrative data hospital discharges from a representative sample of community hospitals throughout the US. Provides excellent picture of "real world" practice. Files can be purchased.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

New York State Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS)
Contains extensive information regarding all hospital and outpatient center health encounters in NY State. Like CMS, has both limited and identified data sets which can be accessed only through an application/approval process. Collaboration with NYPH, as a participating site, will be helpful in defraying expenses and expediting requests.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)
An independent nonprofit, nongovernmental organization located in Washington, DC, was authorized by Congress in 2010. "Specifically, we fund comparative clinical effectiveness research, or CER, as well as support work that will improve the methods used to conduct such studies." Funding opportunities and process are well-described.

Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) of the National Cancer Institute
Provides information on cancer statistics and opportunities for research; released every Spring based on previous year's data.

Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Database (STS)
Extensive clinical registries in adult and pediatric cardiac surgery as well as thoracic surgery. Application can be made by members for access to data for research purposes. Requests must be granted and independent funding to support data analysis by Duke Clinical Research Institute must be found.

Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN) (with Columbia UNI)
A searchable database of funding opportunities from current national and international government and private funding sources, including fellowships, research grants, publication support, sabbatical support, curriculum development, and more. SPIN can be used to conduct manual searches of funding opportunities. SPIN has an Advanced Search tool, so users can identify finding by specific scientific keywords, grant types, locations of research and sponsors.

University Health system Consortium (UHC)
Consortium of 117 academic medical centers (of which CUMC is a participant) who share healthcare information regarding hospitalizations, expenses and quality for research and utilization purposes. Collaboration with NYPH as a participating site will be helpful in defraying expenses and expediting access to data.
