Guide to Rectal Prolapse
Surgeons in the Division of Colorectal Surgery have expertise in both abdominal and perineal procedures for the treatment of rectal prolapse. Whenever possible, our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy and robotic surgery to facilitate early recovery.
Our team is available for second opinion consultations for anyone who wishes to confirm a diagnosis or discuss treatment options.
What is Rectal Prolapse
Rectal prolapse is a condition in which the lower portion of the rectum prolapses (falls) into the anal opening. This can result from stress during childbirth, chronic constipation, or in rare cases, genetic predisposition. Rectal prolapse causes many of the same symptoms as hemorrhoids, including bleeding or tissue protruding from the rectum. If weakness of the anal sphincter occurs in conjunction with rectal prolapse, individuals may experience leakage of stool or mucus.
