What is Reconstructive Surgery?

For any cancer surgery, the primary goal is always to effectively treat the cancer. But for breast cancer, surgery can have a lasting impact on your self-image and happiness. Treating breast cancer can require the partial (lumpectomy) or complete removal of one or both breasts (mastectomy). Even if only a portion of the breast is removed, it may look and feel dramatically different post-surgery. Having radiation before or after surgery can also have a significant effect on the breast, often making it feel firmer and smaller.

Reconstructive surgery focuses on reshaping or recreating the natural look and feel of the breasts to restore your appearance and help you feel more like yourself. By considering a strategy for reconstruction as part of your personalized treatment plan, you can choose options based on your priorities. Reconstruction can often be performed as part of your cancer surgery or can be done later, once you are further along in your recovery.

Treatments We Offer

  • Oncoplastic breast reduction after lumpectomy with or without a breast reconstruction on the non-cancer breast for symmetry
  • Breast implants
  • Autologous free flap reconstruction (using your own tissue, most commonly from your abdomen, to reconstruct your breasts)
  • Nipple reconstruction
  • Fat grafting and skin revision
  • Reconstruction for lumpectomy defects (oncoplastic breast reduction)
